Alice Stevens

August 12, 1946 — August 20, 2016

Alice Stevens, 70, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at her home south of Alpine after a battle with A.L.S.

Born Alice Joanne Griffin on August 12,1946, she is survived by her husband, Michael Stevens, two cats and a blue eyed cow dog Gladys - - who is still camped in the bedroom.

Alice was truly an artist at heart. She moved to the Big Bend in the early 1980s as an art counselor at The Davis Mountain Achievement Center, later to become The High Frontier, and was the first resident counselor to live with the kids.

Most know her for her One Way Plant Nursery, her postcards and her photographs on those walls, but she had an MFA in Art from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth where she taught Jewelry/Metals.

During that time, the early 1970s, her friend, mentor and employer was Henry Hopkins at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and she also studied for years with famed sculptor Harry Geffert.

It was during that time she first met Donald Judd, whom she would later work for in Marfa. Some of the first photos of Judd's work in Marfa were taken by her with Donald's own Hasselblad camera. She took aerial pictures of the 15 concrete structures while double-strapped into Fritz Kahl's plane with the door removed!

Aside from her incredible eye for photo composition, she had jewelry in galleries in Los Angeles and Santa Fe. Most notably, her sleek modern bolo ties and buckle sets were 25 years ahead of the masses. She was also a fine potter and a great dancer!

A celebration and memorial for her will be announced later.

Any memorial donations should be sent to the amazing people at the ALS Association Texas Chapter!
