Donald Thomas Poindexter

Donald Thomas Poindexter was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024, in Alpine, Texas.

Don leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Patricia Poindexter; his daughters Jill Wise (Franklin) and D. Lynn Poindexter-Turk (Gregory); his grandchildren Danielle Sliger, Hannah Olson, Arielle Zahir, and Lucas Turk; and great grand-daughter Audrianna Sliger.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father Ellis and Mary Poindexter and brother, Jack.

Don, born May 10th, 1936, grew up in Indianapolis, graduated from Shortridge High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Purdue University. After completing the ROTC program in high school and university, he entered the Army and became a Captain. He served overseas for two years and in the Army Reserves for five.

Don and Pat met in Detroit, Michigan and were married in 1963. Don was first employed by Liberty Mutual and then began his 30-year career with Texaco, spending the majority of it in Houston, Texas. After retirement, Don and Pat moved to Fort Davis where they have become active members of their community. 

He had a passion for all things automotive from rebuilding car engines to attending Indy 500 races. Don also enjoyed genealogy and was active in the Poindexter Descendants Association. At gatherings with friends and family he was known for his bar tending skills and amusing stories.

Most importantly, Don was a devoted member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alpine, Texas. 

A memorial service honoring Donald's life will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 2:00 PM, with visitation starting at 1:00 PM, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alpine, Texas. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Donald Poindexter may be made to either Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. 

Funeral services have been entrusted to Alpine Memorial Funeral Home in Alpine, Texas.
