Duane A. Phillips and Sarah A. Phillips of Alpine, Texas, were taken home to the Lord on August 25, 2016.
Memorial Services for Duane and Sarah will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Alpine, Texas with Rev. Josh Stueve officiating.
Duane Arlen Phillips (82) was born in Knox City, and spent his childhood moving throughout Texas. His family settled in Sugar Land, where he graduated high school. After a hitch in the United States Marine Corps, he joined IBM in Houston. It was there that he met his life's companion, Sarah.
Sarah Ann Phillips (83) was born in Wichita, Kansas. Her family moved to the Houston area at the end of the Great Depression, and she graduated from Pasadena High School. She and Duane married in 1963 and moved with their son Rick to Portland and then to Corpus Christi, where their two daughters, Christi and Kelly, were born.
They continued to move frequently as Duane climbed the IBM management ladder, living in Texas, Connecticut, Chicago, Maryland, and Germany. Sarah went back to work for IBM once again and became an executive secretary. They both retired in 1987, and shortly thereafter they sailed their boat from Chesapeake Bay down the inland waterway and across the Gulf to Corpus Christi.
In 1993, Duane and Sarah moved once again, this time to Alpine, Texas, in order to be full-time grandparents to Jade and Sage, the young daughters of Rick and his wife Kim. They were an active presence in their granddaughters' lives from small children into adulthood. In the process, they ended up living in Alpine longer than they had lived anywhere in their lives, and they came to cherish the area and their Far West Texas community.
Duane and Sarah are survived by their children, Rick and Kim Keith of Alpine and Kelly and Kirstin Phillips of Flagstaff, AZ; their grandchildren, Jade and Chris Schofield of Millsap, Texas, and Sage Keith of Marfa; and their great-grandchildren Finn and Sawyer Schofield.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that a donation be made to a charity of your choice in honor of Duane and Sarah Phillips.
