Jimmy Cecil Thomas, a beloved pillar of the Alpine, Texas community, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2023, at the age of 84. Born December 5, 1938 in Lubbock, Texas, he was the son of the late Johnny Cecil Thomas and Ora Imerree Shirley. Jimmy was reunited in death with his parents, as well as his sister Wanda Britnell and husband Guy. Jimmy is survived by his sister Verna Cannaday (husband Lynn now deceased).
A devoted husband and father, Jimmy was married to Elaine Neal, with whom he raised two children, Janice Villavaso (husband Bryan, who passed away) and Jimmy Wade Thomas (wife Rebecca Urquidez). He then found enduring happiness in his 47-year marriage to Barbara Emrick, embracing the role of father to her two children, whom he later adopted, David Thomas (married to Brianna) and Allen Thomas (married to Tara).
Jimmy's legacy thrives through 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren who will continue to honor his memory. He took great pride in his family and cherished every moment spent with them. As a long-time resident of Alpine, he will forever be remembered by locals as "Mr. Sonic," having owned and operated the Sonic Drive-In for an impresive 33 years. Jimmy had a passion for amateur radio, operating under the call sign N5JOE. He fearlessly tracked storms, providing real-time updates on weather conditions. Jimmy was a man of faith, devoted to his Christian beliefs. He found strength and purpose in his relationship with God, and his commitment to his faith resonated in his interactions with others.
During his final year, Jimmy resided at Focused Care, where his positive outlook and humorous anecdotes endeared him to both residents and staff. Despite the challenges, he continued to spread his warmth and joy, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of sharing his company.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Grace Christian Fellowship or directed towards his wife Barbara to assist with funeral expenses. These gestures of support will honor Jimmy's memory and his commitment to community and family.
A memorial service to celebrate Jimmy's life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 28, 2023, at Grace Christian Fellowship located at 801 E Brown Ave., Alpine, TX 79830.
