Josef Schlosser

March 12, 1996 — February 25, 2016

Our beloved, Josef Frederick Schlosser, 19 years of age, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2016 in Alpine, Texas. Josef was born on March 12, 1996 in Weston, Florida and was baptized at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Weimar, Texas by Monsignor Bily. He was an avid swimmer and was on the Swim Team in Huntsville, Texas for years. He loved hiking and camping in the Cub Scouts and one of his favorite things was hiking the Window Trail in Big Bend with his family after his Mom recuperated from cancer.
In the seventh grade, Josef was awarded "High Honors" by the John Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth for being among the highest scoring participants in Texas; and for "High Honors" in Mathematics, Verbal Talent and Reading. Josef attended the Southern Methodist Summer Camp for gifted children after 8th and 9th grades for two weeks each summer. After his first summer, he told his family, "I've finally found my ‘Peeps.' He was invited to work as a summer intern at John Hopkins in the cancer research project that was working on skin replacements for wounded soldiers.

Josef was a recent graduate of Alpine High School where he went to state in debate in his junior year. He played French Horn and Tuba in the high school band. After graduation, Josef attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. Josef loved band, powerlifting, computer technology, and electronic music. Josef wanted to attend law school and was taking practice exams for the LSAT- and scoring near perfect scores.
Recently, Josef had been researching his family and German heritage. One thing that especially interested him was both of his grandfathers' service in World War II and he was planning on ordering the complete record of their awarded medals. His maternal grandfather was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and his paternal grandfather was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Josef was very proud of their service and his father's service in Vietnam. As a Christmas gift this year for his mother and aunt, Josef collected, organized, and prepared a digital documentary of his maternal grandfather's letters and photos of war time service in England.

Josef was an active blogger on basketball sites. His favorite team was the Miami Heat. Josef enjoyed playing in internet chess and video game championships with competitors around the world. He had many friends in Korea that he played games with and he was learning Korean to better visit with them. Josef loved traveling and visited Disney many times in Florida and California. His favorite trips were to the Bahamas and Hawaii where he swam with the turtles, dolphins, and whales. Josef enjoyed many trips to the family lake house in Minnesota where he would fish, fish and then fish some more only taking breaks to wake board and travel to Montana and Wyoming for fly fishing. Josef attended electronic music concerts in Austin, Houston, and Las Vegas. He attended the Electronic Daisy Festival in Las Vegas last July and said it was a life-changing event for him.

Josef is survived by his loving parents, Frederick Schlosser and Dr. Rebecca Schlosser, Aunt and Uncle and Godparents, Kathleen and James McIver and their children Kamille and Colin, Uncle Ray Van Keuren, Aunt Wyn Rossi and daughter Wendy, Aunt and Uncle, Lynn and Richard Schlosser and their children Richard, Nicholas and Jenna, and Aunt Mary Schlosser Rothacker and her children Dennis and Beth. Josef cherished his family and had a special fondness for all his cousins.
