Larry McCallister

February 8, 1954 — January 27, 2025

Larry Lee McCallister, age 70, passed away on January 27, 2025, at his home in Alpine, Texas.

Born on February 8, 1954, in Hugoton, Kansas, Larry was the son of Thomas and Dorothy McCallister and the younger brother of Jim McCallister. Throughout his life, the family moved frequently due to job opportunities, living in various parts of New Mexico before moving to Texas. Larry graduated from Fort Stockton High School in 1972, where he was a standout athlete, participating in football, basketball, and track. He was also honored with the title of Mr. FSHS.

After high school, Larry joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a sergeant, primarily stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon his discharge in 1975, he returned to Fort Stockton and worked for Coors. His career eventually brought him to Alpine, where he bought the Crystal Bar in 1987, turning it into a popular gathering place for college students, cowboys, Dallas Cowboys fans, and anyone seeking a good time. After selling the bar, Larry worked many different places including Highland Concrete and later becoming self-employed

In 1997, Larry married his best friend, Mary, after meeting her at the Crystal Bar eight years earlier. Together, they raised two beautiful daughters.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary McCallister; daughters, Sydney McCallister and Lyndsey Estepp (and her husband Cooper Estepp); his brother, Jim McCallister, and his wife, Terry McCallister; along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, one nephew, and one niece.

Larry was a man of few words, but his love for his family, dogs, friends, and the Dallas Cowboys was undeniable. He had a passion for fishing, spending time at the lake, and enjoying a whiskey and Coke or a cold Coors Light. Above all, Larry was the ultimate “girl dad” and took great pride in supporting his daughters, whether they were competing in sports or involved in FFA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Big Bend Livestock Show Association at PO Box 1342, Alpine, TX 79831 or the Big Bend Amateur Softball Association.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at the Alpine American Legion on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. All who knew and loved Larry are welcome to join in celebrating the man, the myth, the legend, Larry McCallister.
