Manuel Bustamante Payne Mano, 72, a lifetime resident of Alpine was called home Friday, March 21, 2014.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 27 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, March 28, at Our Lady of Peace. Burial will follow at the Holy Angles cemetery. Alpine Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Manuel was born September 10, 1941 to Rocky and Cruz Payne. He was a graduate of Alpine High School and attended Sul Ross State University. Manuel married Luisa on November 21, 1972. Out of this marriage came the greatest gifts of his life, son Eric and daughter Cynthia.
Manuel retired from the Texas Department of Transportation following 35 years of service. He coached little league baseball for 23 years. A field was dedicated in his honor for his service. He touched many lives coaching. Manuel served as a football and basketball official for several years. He recruited many young people into the profession. Manuel served his community in many ways he served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Parks and Recreation Board, the Animal Humane Society Board. He served three two year terms on the Alpine City Council. He was a member of the Lions Club and served as an Ambassador for several years.
Manuel enjoyed watching the Texas Longhorns play ball. He also had a passion for horses. Growing up he spent time on ranches. He worked as a ranch hand and mastered the art of breaking horses.
He is survived by wife Luisa Payne, two adult children, Eric and Cynthia, sisters Nora Geron and Suzy Acosta and brother Larry Payne. His loving grandchildren, Manuel Isaac Payne, Deanna Janae Payne, Dionee Jewel Payne, Josue Ange Payne, Aneesa Izabel Payne, Araceli Elyse Ramos and Alec Xavier Ramos. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
