Merced Huerta Muniz, Sr., 61, of Alpine, passed away at his residence, on Friday, April 18, 2014.
Rosary service will be held Thursday, April 24, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25 at Our Lady of Peace and burial to follow at the Holy Angels cemetery. Alpine Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Merced was born September 24, 1952 in Alpine, Texas to Pedro and Celestina Muniz and live in Alpine most of his life.
Merced was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. He was employed at Sul Ross for many years, and enjoyed serving those in need, doing carpentry work and other odd jobs in his free time. He loved golf, baseball, and softball, and spent many years coaching youth baseball teams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Felipe Muniz, Sr. and sisters Preciliana Mancha, and Felicita Guadarrama.
Merced is survived by his wife Cora Muniz, four sons Jonathan Portillo and his wife Mandy of Alpine, Robert Anthony Fierro and wife Lisa of Killeen, Felipe Valenzuela of El Paso, Merced Muniz, Jr. of Midland, one daughter, Sabrina Muniz of San Angelo, five brothers, Celestino Muniz of Plainview, Pablo Muniz of Artesia, NM, Cruz Muniz, Sr., Juan Muniz and Joel Muniz, Sr. all of Alpine. He is also survived by his aunt, Nicolasa Orquiz, and uncle, Francisco Huerta both of Artesia, NM, eleven grandchildren, one great grandson and many nieces and nephews.
Merced was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Pallbearers will be Damien Portillo, J.D. Portillo, Cruz Muniz, Jr., Joel Muniz, Jr. Paul A. Muniz, T.J. Arispe, Felipe Muniz, Jr. and George Vega.
Honorary Pallbearers are Devon Portillo, Diego A. Fierro, Rodrigo Fierro, Isaiah Rivera, Reuel Portillo, J.J. Espinosa, and Bobby Boludo Estrada.
