Rev. Myrick

September 9, 1927 — August 12, 2017

he Reverend H. Eugene Myrick, 89, went home to be with His Lord on Saturday, August 12, 2017. He was born in Gallup, New Mexico on September 9, 1927 to John Thomas Myrick and Mary Francis (Sanders). He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jackie Myrick, his cousin Lorraine Walters, his Uncle Ralph Myrick, his Aunt Mary Myrick Walters, and Donald Joseph Mulhern. Father Myrick was a US Army Korean War Veteran. He graduated from The Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkley, California in 1960. He was made a deacon and moved to El Paso. In 1961, he was ordained priest by Bishop Kinsolving and served at St. Clement's Episcopal Church as a much beloved associate to a number of rectors until 1976. At St. Clement, the late Reverend B.M.G. Williams (Uncle Bert) was a faithful mentor and friend to Father Myrick. He taught him that the main focus of his work was to pastor and love the people, a principle which Father Gene practiced faithfully until the last day of his life. In 1976, He was called to be the first rector of St. Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church. He served there joyfully until 1984, at which time he became the Chaplain of Providence Memorial Hospital until 1992. Father Myrick always found great meaning and blessing in his many avenues of service. In 1996 Father Myrick retired to Alpine, Texas and lived there happily for twenty years with his many beloved friends. He participated actively in the Alpine community and was named "Citizen of the Year" in 2002, along with his longtime friend Don Mulhern. He was a member of The Alpine Rotary Club and a volunteer with The Museum of the Big Bend. He was a devoted member of Holy Cross Anglican Church where he assisted with services when needed. Father Myrick loved to travel. He spent many wonderful years traveling with friends and family, particularly to England. He was a devoted admirer of Queen Elizabeth II and all things pertaining to the royal family. He was an avid reader and enjoyed needlepointing, painting and his many beloved dogs. He was a loving and devoted pastor and friend to all who were blessed to know him. He will be greatly missed. Father Myrick is survived by his cousins Mary Elizabeth Hatch (John) and Frank Stimac (Carla) of Farmington, New Mexico, Ralph Myrick (Judy) and Norma Myrick Nunamaker of Richland, Washington. He is also survived by a number of half nephews, half nieces and two great nephews. The family and friends of Father Gene are forever grateful to Dr. Ariana Bender, Dr. Jeff Speir, and Linda Black for their excellent medical care and to his wonderful team of compassionate caregivers with Visiting Angels - Joe Parra, Ashley Dell, Christina Cadena, Albert Valdez, David Kleinfeld, Andres Camacho, and Fabiola Salas.
