Richard Zubiate, 84, passed away on August 22, 2024, surrounded by his children and friends at his ranch near Brownwood, Texas. He was born in Marfa, Texas on February 7, 1940 to Cruz and Sixto Zubiate.
He attended school in Marfa and then Sul Ross University to study Accounting. He married Ida Ramirez of Marfa and had four children. He was a devout Christian in his later life. His favorite Bible verse, which he taught to his children, was Psalm 23.
Richard spent most of his life as a woodworker. He loved building furniture and restoring antiques. In the late 60’s, he was a member of the Yesleta Gun Club where he enjoyed competing in metallic silhouette shooting.
He mastered the art of hitting a target at 500 meters shooting offhand. He was an avid outdoorsman and went on many deer hunts around Marfa, Presidio, and Van Horn, Texas. Every spring he would take his two sons to a lake in Northern Mexico called El Granero. They would spend a week or more in this remote area catching largemouth bass.
He spent his retired years living on his little ranch near Brownwood, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his son, Peter Zubiate and his wife, Ida Zubiate.
He is survived by his two daughters, Hope Espinosa and Debra Carlin, his son, Paul Zubiate, and his two sisters Evangeline Baldwin and Anita Segura. He has ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the compassionate in-home care provided by Alpha Omega Hospice.
Special thanks go out to the Martinez family; Jose Luis, Genoveva, Elpidio and Josue of Brownwood, Texas.
They looked in on Richard every week for the past two years. Elpidio and Josue took him out to breakfast and helped him track down unusual single-shot rifles that he wanted to buy.
A burial service will be held on Saturday, September 7th 2024 at 11:00 AM at Cementerio De La Merced in Marfa, Texas. A celebration of life will follow at the First Christian Church in Marfa, Texas.
