Ventura Herrera

July 14, 1931 — March 30, 2017

Marfa - Ventura C. Herrera, age 85, died on March 30th, 2017 at Sagebrook Skilled Nursing Heath Center in Cedar Park, Texas. Mr. Herrera was born on July 14th, 1931 in Casa Piedra, Texas to Jose Herrera and Concha Chavez Herrera.
Rosary will be recited on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 9:30 am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Mary's Catholic Church with Father Esteban Sescon officiating. United States Military Burial will follow at Merced Cemetery.
Honoring Mr. Herrera by serving as pallbearers are: Louis Herrera, Nicholas Herrera, Gabriel Vasquez, Adrian Vasquez, Robert Ontiveroz and Andrew Ontiveroz.
Mr. Herrera is a veteran of the Koran War, where he earned several medals, including the Korean Service Medal, Two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the United States Army never left him.
Mr. Herrera retired after twenty-six years with the Texas Department of Transportation as a heavy machinery operator. During his tenure with the Department of Transportation, he was instrumental in building new roads as well as new easements for the State of Texas in Presidio County. He was also instrumental in making the parking lot and driveways for the Marfa Lights Observation Center. After enjoying a few years of retirement, Mr. Herrera went to work for The Mc Guire Ranch where he built a runway on the ranch for Mr. Mc Guires planes, as well as the dam that supports aquatic life for the ranch.
Mr. Herrera loved to visit with friends and family and enjoyed spending time with Veterans of the various wars as well. In his past time, he enjoyed feeding the birds and watching them eat bird feed that he put out for them. He also enjoyed working with his hands and making little stools for various family members, as well as gardening, fishing, and growing roses.
Mr. Herrera is preceded in death by his wife Lora Herrera, his son Rudy Herrera, his parents Jose and Concha Herrera, his brothers Antonio Herrera and Juan Herrera.
Those left to cherish and honor Mr. Herrera's wonderful legacy are: his daughters: Corina Herrera of Alpine, Conchita Vasquez of Marfa, Nora Lujan of Lago Vista; his sons: Benny Herrera of Odessa, Ernest Herrera of Alice, and Joe Herrera of San Antonio. Mr. Herrera is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
